The MG School Board's ad hoc Sustainability Committee was created in 2019 to provide guidance for developing the district's environmental sustainability. This committee consists of school board members and members of the school community (including community members, family members, teachers and students) with expertise and interest in sustainability.
In 2020 the Monona Grove School District applied for a $250,000 solar energy grant from Office of Energy Innovation’s Energy Innovation Grant Program. The application was successful, leading to the solar array on the high school, which is described below.
Additionally, in 2021 Monona Grove partnered with three other local school districts (Middleton-Cross Plains, Oregon and Sun Prairie) to apply for a planning grant from the Office of Energy Innovation’s Energy Innovation Grant Program. The application was successful and the four entities are currently collaborating to develop comprehensive energy plans. These plans will be a path to increased savings and reduced emissions for the districts.

The Monona Grove School District installed a 674 kW solar array on the roof of the Monona Grove High School in 2022. At installation, this project was the largest solar array on a school in Wisconsin and covered about 2/3 of the MGHS roof. The project will provide about half of the electricity used at the school and is expected to save the district about $1.5M over the lifetime of the array. Learn more.
